Black Star 2.0
Black Star is the hip-hop group consisting of Mos Def and Talib Kweli. Their single collaborative album Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star was released in 1998 to limited sales but critical acclaim. It was crafted in the wake of deaths of Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac and the central theme to the album is combating hip-hop’s fascination at the time with death and that gangsta mentality. In fact, in many of the songs Mos Def and Talib make pointed references to the issue, such as the hook in the song Definition:
"One two three/Mos Def and Talib Kweli/We came to rock it on to the tip-top/Best alliance in hip-hop, Y-O/I said, one two three/It’s kind of dangerous to be an emcee/They shot Tupac and Biggie/Too much violence in hip-hop, Y-O"
To put it bluntly the Black Star album is a classic and a time stamp of the era it was made in. It has been over a decade since its release and besides a few features on each others songs Mos Def and Talib have not seen it fit to reunite on another full-length album. Their most recent collab was on the History track and Talib dropped some bars in reference to their epic work:
"We get it poppin’ like the head chorus/The flow is historic/They can’t get rid of us/Ubiquitous/And we lay the law like Leviticus/Ten years ago we made history so they missin’ us"
I personally would like to see Talib and Mos Def put out another album. It would be a win for hip-hop in every regard.
Lemme know what you think Defsounds and if you have any information on the subject feel free to drop some knowledge.
Here is that History track:
I like Slaughterhouse and will cop the album August 11th so all you fans don’t get your panties in a bunch just cause the teaser said "Fuck Slaughterhouse". It was a social experiment to incite more traffic to the blog. We will see how well it works…
Take it easy Defsounds. Flow out.
